Why Doesn’t it work?
Ever wonder why OSX Lion is such a small download compared to previous versions? Mac OS versions tend to be around 7GB in size, Lion is only 3.45GB. The secret here is that Lion only contains critical features and applications, anything else such as Flash and printer drivers would be installed from the internet as and when they are required.
Extra space is saved by dropping PowerPC support. During the transition between the PowerPC architecture and Intel, Apple included a background piece of software in the OS called Rosetta which allows PowerPC applications to run on Intel Macs. With Lion, Rosetta and PowerPC support has been dropped completely and applications written for PowerPC no longer work at all. This is a problem for applications written for PowerPC, such as Adobe Photoshop CS2 and SimCity 4.
I want to play SimCity 4! (On Lion)
There are two ways of doing this, you could set up a Virtual Windows machine and find a Windows copy of SimCity 4. However, after installing possibly one of the most elegant desktop OSes (Lion), I assume you would want a more elagant solution to go with it…
Aspyr is responsible for providing SimCity 4 support for Intel based Macs. This Patch was released in 2007 and installing this would allow SimCity 4 to work on Lion. The SimCity 4 application icon will now also be added to the Launchpad for your enjoyment once the patch has been installed. Performance is still slow (bearing in mind that SimCity 4 for Mac is not written to take advantage of Intel CPU’s) and closing/saving cities seems to take forever, but it works. So give it a try!

You’re welcome :) Definitely, you can import cities and regions etc like you used to, but I’m not an avid user of plugins though.

Sorry, it’s me again. I just tried to do as you said BUT…
Everything opened, region and a new city, I could edit the GOD MODE, but when I pressed the mayor button, to build the city it crashed and i couldn’t do anything but restart the mac.
And I tried to open a city and it did the same. what should i do?

I came across a similar problem when exiting one of my cities with the patch installed where it would not respond for 5 minutes, but I just left it for a while and it sorted itself out :) I’m not sure if this is the same problem you’re experiencing but in your situation I would just backup my regions (Applications/SimCity 4/SimCity 4 Data/Regions) and do a clean install of Sim City 4 and apply the patch again.

Ok, first backup your regions which are located in Documents/SimCity4/Regions.
Then delete the SimCity 4 Folder from your Applications folder. Also delete the SimCity 4 folder located in your documents folder
Once you’ve done that, pop the SimCity 4 CD in and install again, and then install the patch again from Aspyr
Copy your regions which you’ve backed up into the Documents/SimCity4/Regions folder.
Then hopefully it should start working properly again :) Don’t forget to back up with TimeMachine or something before though just in case it gores wrong :)

I’m also having the mayor mode crash problem. I uninstalled. However, when I try to install now it says I cant install b/c powerpc apps aren’t supported. Thoughts on getting around this?

Awesome, thanks a lot. I would have never thought a patch would fix this. Since Sim City 4 is an older game, I thought their wouldn’t be an article about this. Thanks a lot for making this.

just hangs for me as well. We all LOVE SC4 in this house and we never imagined that this would cause us not to be able to use it, or we would have kept one machine back at Snow Leopard. Why is ASPYR not releasing a new version of the game? We always thought it was one of the most popular games of all time!
Anyways, any help on the link to download the patch? Thanks!

Hey Mark :) Me too! Although most people in my house complain that I play too much lol. The download link should be working fine now, I just tested it again. Megaupload.com wasn’t working for me either this morning but it seems to be sorted now :D Hope this helps! :D

Works fine now. It was megaupload.com. And now we are all happy – thanks again for posting this. I find it obnoxious that Aspyr “The Greatest Mac Publisher on Earth, ever” doesn’t even have the patch available, much less show any interest in recompiling the game as an Intel binary.

I have downloaded, installed, but she trying to open getting message: SimCity 4 Rush Hour unexpectedly. Click to open the application again. This will be sent to Apple automatically.

I downloaded the megaupload thing and sim city4 torrent but when i try opening it, i get an error that says “sim city 4 was installed wrong”

I downloaded the link just fine but when I open it I get a message “This update can not be installed because an existing application of SimCity 4 Rush Hour could not be found”. I normally keep the dmg file in a folder and mount when I want to play. I tried copying the game file to the hard drive but still no go. Any advice?

Annie, I am having the same problem! What was your solution? When I try to run the patch, it says it can’t be installed while the game is mounted. So I eject the game and try again and then it says the application could not be found. What did you do to make it work?

Alana, you have to copy the Sim City 4 Rush Hour Installer from the patch download into the folder with. the SimCity 4 executable file

Hey allened. It still not work for me.

I’m assuming that everyone here who got it to work was using the Rush Hour version of the game, since that appears to be what the patch was designed for. I only have the original Sim City 4. Am I missing something. Since the patch doesn’t apply to a Sim City 4 install, I “manually” installed the patch with Pacifist, but I wasn’t surprised when it complained that it couldn’t find the Rush Hour CD.
